On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama defeated John McCain and became the first African American to be elected President of the United States. He delivered his victory speech before a crowd of hundreds of thousands of his supporters in Chicago at Grant Park.
Over 1.5 million spectators lined the 26.2 mile Chicago Marathon course to watch the runners in action. The marathon began with 45,000 runners, 31,041 crossed the finish line.
